Monkey King Art

Here are some questions we are often asked:

Who are your influences?

Louis Jordan, Louis Prima and Keeley Smith, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Patsy Cline, T-Bone Walker, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Howlin' Wolf, Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis Presley, Julie London, Brian Setzer

How did you come up with the name?

Short Answer: "The Monkey King" is an homage to Louis Prima's "King Louis" in The Jungle Book.

Long Answer: The Monkey King is a clever trickster whom we much admire in Chinese mythology. We like to have fun. Also, the character of the monkey in many traditions is associated with music and the arts in general. Steve is an artist and musician and leaves something of a self-described "slug trail" of art wherever he goes.

The "Heather" part is an actual given name. :-)

How long have you been playing?

We've been playing as Heather and the Monkey King since 2002.

What did you do before Heather and the Monkey King?

The Monkey King has been in bands since he was a wee lad. Leading up to Heather and the Monkey King, he played in jazz combos and even had a surf band (fez). Heather was strictly a shower singer and began by playing keyboard and percussion in fez. ( www.myspace.com/fezloungexotic )
What type of music do you play?

Uptown blues, swing, and rockabilly. We do a lot of jazz standards and danceable swing, and the Monkey King just can't shake his rockabilly influences. We do like to have fun and are proud of the fact that we get praise from young'ns as well as people who heard the standards the first time around. We perform tunes from artists as varied as George Gershwin and Johnny Cash, Duke Ellington and Elvis Presley. We also take 80s pop artists (like Guns n Roses, Billy Idol, Judas Priest) and swing their gates so that vintage listeners love them, too.

How many people are in the band?

That varies, depending on the venue. Heather and the Monkey King are the hub, and we regularly go up to six pieces. Whenever it's more than just the two of us, it's Heather and the Monkey Kings.

Are you married?

Yes. That is, Heather and the Monkey King are married. The inevitable follow-up question is whether we were married first or in the band first. We were married first. And we like the fact that we get to dress up and sing love songs to each other.

What is the Monkey King's real name?

Steve.
